Meet Dr. Ray

Dr. Ray was born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana. He graduated from Bloomington South in 1982. He then went to South Bend and graduated from the University of Notre Dame. He remains an insufferable Notre Dame fan to this day.

Dr. Ray came back to Bloomington to study medicine. He received top honors in Physiology, Pharmacology and Biochemistry and clinical medicine. He was the top student from Indiana University entering Surgery and graduated with Honors from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1992. He then went to Denver to study surgery at the University of Colorado Health Science Center. He received the distinction of Intern of the Year in 1993. After finishing as chief resident in 1997, he decided to pursue clinical practice.

In 1997, Dr. Ray came back to Bloomington to start his surgical practice. From the beginning he had an interest in advanced laparoscopy. Since then he has introduced many procedures that were previously not available in south central Indiana. Dr. Ray has performed over 1000 laparoscopic hernia repairs, 1000 laparoscopic appendectomies, and well over a 2000 laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries. He has the largest experience in this region performing laparoscopic colon surgery as well as laparoscopic anti-reflux procedures, laparoscopic removal of the spleen and laparoscopic removal of the adrenal gland.

In 2004, he started the lap band program in Bloomington. He received his training from Dr. Jeff Allen and Paul O’Brien-both of whom are recognized international experts. Dr. Ray modeled his approach after these successful practices and has the largest lap band program in Indiana. Perhaps more importantly, his results compare favorably with the best programs in the world.

He has presented his results at international meetings and published in international journals. His findings have been influential across the country and have been reported in the national media as well.

He enjoys spending time with his family, reading and playing music.
