Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. BMI, rather than weight, is used to determine if you qualify for surgery. People whose BMI is greater than or equal to 40 kg/m2 qualify for surgery whether or not they have any weight-related illnesses. Traditionally, patients with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 or greater and who have a weight related illness would qualify. In early 2011, the FDA lowered that to 30 kg/m2. To calculate your BMI, simply type in your height and weight.
